Municipal street maintenance challenges and management practices in Sweden

The municipal street network acts as a multifunctional asset by providing people, vehicles and public services with well-functioning infrastructure. To keep it in good condition, optimal maintenance measures are required which would result an efficient use of taxpayers’ money. This paper investigates the deterioration processes management practices that administrations have applied Sweden. study is based on survey Swedish municipalities using questionnaires complementary interviews. answers provide insight into wide range common pavement distresses factors, along practices. identifies potholes, surface unevenness alligator cracking most cited challenges, while ageing, heavy traffic patches noted causes. Similarly, cold climate population density influential factors deterioration. Allocation rehabilitation reconstruction budget higher northern part country well densely populated municipalities. Condition data collection commercial Pavement Management Systems (PMS) limited. Addressing challenges effectively may be possible through enhancement budget, feasible/clear guidelines from councils/politicians, reducing gap between utility service providers.
